Issue

Test Images not Visible when Viewing Test Results via My Grades.
When students view their results for a test with embedded images via the My Grades tool, the images do not appear.

Workaround

Blackboard is aware of the issue and is working on a patch.

Issue

Students can access an Assessment with a Due Date that is in a Learning Module via their My Blackboard updates.  This could be unintended if the instructor requires sequential viewing of the Learning Module.

Workaround

Add the Assessment as a content item outside the Learning Module with adaptive release rules added for review of the Learning Module content.

Assignments

Issue

Student submissions that contain special characters (e.g., colon, hash) are not downloadable/viewable.

Workaround

Avoid special characters in filenames.  Use letters, numbers, and underscore. Give proper file extensions (e.g., .doc or .docx for an MS Word document).

Issue

Group Assignments returned with an attachment containing spaces generate a 404 error.

Workaround

Avoid special characters and spaces in the file attachment you return to the student. Use letters, numbers, and underscore. Give proper file extensions (e.g., .doc or .docx for an MS Word document).

Browser

Issue

Content: You've just logged in, but you are asked to authenticate for a piece of content (like a banner image on the home page)

Workaround

This is typically a browser cookie issue.
Clear Firefox Blackboard cookies.pdf
Clear MSIE Blackboard bbcswebdav cookie.pdf

Issue

Browsers (Internet Explorer 9 or later, Chrome 21 or later) will display an "insecure content" or "mixed content" security notification if you try to load non-secure (http URL) external content within Blackboard (e.g., embedded Youtube videos).

Note: Firefox 23 or later now enables mixed content blocking by default.

Workaround

Our Blackboard is running as a secure server (https URL).  Modern browsers now warn if you are trying to load insecure content within a secure page -- as it could possibly be malicious.   If you trust the content you are trying to display, you would need to explicitly allow the content to load, otherwise you would get a blank area where you expect content to appear.

More information:

Issue

Chrome (v21 or later) browser now has a more subtle warning about "insecure content."  This may cause students to be unaware of the issue when trying to view external content within Blackboard (e.g., embedded Youtube videos).

Workaround

Chrome (v21 or later) now uses a shield icon  to warn you "This page has insecure content." You need to click on the shield icon to display the "insecure content" warning and get the option to allow the content to load.

Issue

Mac-only: Java for OS X 2012-006 (October 16, 2012) uninstalls Apple-provided Java applet plug-in for all web browsers. There are a few tools in Blackboard that currently use Java Applets: Virtual Classroom/Chat, Equation Editor, Multiple Files and Folder Upload

Workaround

To use applets on a web page, click on the region labeled "Missing plug-in" to go download the latest version of the Java applet plug-in from Oracle. Note: the new plug-in does not work with the current Chrome browser (for Mac).

Issue

Mac - The scrollbars in OS X Mountain Lion and Lion are hidden until activated by use.

http://osxdaily.com/2011/08/03/show-scroll-bars-mac-os-x-lion/

Blackboard is aware of the issue.  For now, the spell check does function correctly for Chrome and Safari.

Issue

The Java Update 7u51, issued by Oracle on January 14, 2014, contains security requirements which require changes to Blackboard Learn to accommodate. With Java Update 7u51 installed, the following functions in Blackboard Learn will not work:

  • Upload multiple files within Content Collection
  • Chat/Virtual Classroom

Workaround

Blackboard is aware of the issue and is working on patches.

  • Use the single file upload function (for uploading files)
  • Roll back to a previous version of the client-side Java
  • If you cannot roll back, you can try setting the Java security from HIGH (default) to MEDIUM

WindowsMac
  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Java > Security tab
  2. Set slider to Medium
  3. Click OK
  1. Go to Preferences > Java > Security tab
  2. Set slider to Medium
  3. Click OK

Issue

Internet Explorer Security Update Causes IE11 to Crash when an Instructor Accesses a Blackboard Learn Course

Microsoft recently released a security update for Internet Explorer 11

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2909921

MS14-010: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: February 11, 2014

We're now hearing from other Blackboard Institutions that with the most recent update, users are getting the error "Internet Explorer has stopped working"  when they try to access Blackboard (9.1SP11 or later).

Workaround

We've been able to replicate the issue, and find that removing the security update KB2909921 will restore functionality.

More information and steps to remove the security update can be found here.

Note: Internet Explorer 11 is not a certified browser to use with our version of Blackboard (9.1SP13).  Please refer to Supported Browsers and Operating Systems page.

Resolved April 24, 2014.

Issue

Upload Multiple Files and Folder java applet does not work with Mac OS X (10.7 or later), can cause browser (Safari, Firefox) to freeze.

Issue
Workaround

Issue

WorkaroundClear the added zero (0) scored submission. Resolved February 6, 2014.

Calendar

Issue

Calendar color picker does not work if your courseid has a dot (.) in it.

With the new calendar, we are supposed to be able to change the color  for the courses that the calendar events belong to. However, that is not the case with JHU courses because they contain a dot (.) in them.

Workaround
Issue

Calendar selection checkboxes do not persist if your courseid has a dot (.) in it.

If you uncheck the box next to certain course calendars to remove their events from the calendar and then you log out and log back in, the system does not remember the calendars you unchecked.if you uncheck the box next to certain course calendars to remove their events from the calendar and then you log out and log back in, the system does not remember the calendars you uncheckedif you uncheck the box next to certain course calendars to remove their events from the calendar and then you log out and log back in, the system does not remember the calendars you unchecked

Workaround
Issue

Calendar widget does not display month correctly. Example, February 2014 has Feb 01 - 03 showing up on Wednesday - Friday (incorrect), and on Saturday - Monday (correct).

WorkaroundIt is a display issue.  You can still select the date or manually type it into the field. Resolved February 10, 2014.

Chat/Virtual Classroom

Issue

Chat/Virtual Classroom prompts to "An applet from blackboard.jhu.edu is requesting access to your computer..." (or similar)

Workaround

There are a few tools in Blackboard that currently use Java Applets.  You will need to accept/allow access for the feature to function. As a security precaution, it should specify "blackboard.jhu.edu".

Issue

Virtual Classroom Continuously Redirects When Using Tool "Map"

The tool "Map" in the Virtual Classroom can cause one of two things to occur:

  • When two users are in Virtual Classroom, anytime one user clicks the "Map" function, the other user is kicked out of the Virtual Classroom.
  • User is redirected to the uploaded file instead of Virtual Classroom session. If the user tries to re-enter they continue to get redirected to the file.
WorkaroundAvoid the "Map" tool in Virtual Classroom. Consider using a more robust collaboration tool like Adobe Connect (see http://connect.johnshopkins.edu)

Content

Issue

Content Area > Build Content > File > Browse Computer: You get an "Action not complete: Adding the selected content to the specified folder causes the folder to exceed its quota" when you try to upload a file.

Workaround

By default, courses and organizations have a 2GB course quota.  It can be expanded upon request by contacting blackboard@jhu.edu.

Issue

Build Content > File  does not auto-populate the Name field (e.g., with the uploaded filename) as in prior versions of Blackboard.

Workaround

Fill in the Name field.

Email

Issue

Send Email in large course generates an error (e.g., Server Error 404 - File or directory not found. 500 - Internal server error)

Workaround

1 - you can ignore the error as the emails will actually get sent

2 - if possible, send email to a smaller group

Grade Center

Issue

Grade Center: Work Offline > Upload only allows 32 characters for any text cell.

Workaround

Any grade entry can have comments added to it. Comments are entered either through the Grade Details page or from the Quick Comments option in the Feedback to User or Grading Notes fields. Comments entered into the Grading Notes field cannot be accessed by Students or Observers.

Issue

Assignment: If an assignment filename has a hash symbol (#) in it, a user will encounter a 404 error when attempting to download submissions from the Grade Center. Note: the file never gets does get stored in Blackboard.  Instructor can retrieve it Grade Center > Assignment File Download.

Workaround

While this has been resolved in the latest service pack (Dec 27, 2010), we still recommend only using letters, numbers, underscore and proper file extensions (e.g., doc) when naming files.

Issue 'Points possible' in Weighted column may be incorrect if you are using Categories and Weight Columns Proportionally
WorkaroundUse 'Weight Columns Equally'
Issue

Mac OS X Missing Grade Center (Horizontal) Scrollbars in Chrome and Safari (6.0.4/6.0.5)

  3. Upgrade Chrome (v.27 or later)
  4. Also see the issue under Browser "Mac - The scrollbars in OS X Mountain Lion and Lion are hidden until activated by use."

Groups

Workaround

Blackboard is aware of the issue. Link to Groups Tool directly.

Issue

Groups Management issue when dealing with large Group/Group Sets (~ 100+ members)

  • when trying to edit a large Group or Group Set, an error "Load group members failed. Please try reloading this page." is displayed

Workaround

Even though error is displayed, the page loads with existing group members.

Issue

Groups Management issue when dealing with large Group/Group Sets (~ 100+ members)

  • Groups > Group Sets > select a group set which has large number of members > Edit Group Site Membership with filter "Hide members already in another group" generates 500 - Internal server error.

Workaround

Uncheck filter "Hide members already in another group"

Partially Resolved April 24, 2014.

You can now get to the Add Users screen. The first screen of 25 results will appear, and you can add anyone from that 25 results to your group.

However, if you try to go Next Page, or Sort Columns, then Blackboard could still  generate an extremely long URL which causes a Server error.

Issue

Groups Management issue when dealing with large Group/Group Sets (~ 100+ members)

  • Edit Group > Add Users gives a 404 - File or Directory not found

Workaround

Unfortunately, the only workaround at the moment is to have smaller Groups.  A rough rule-of-thumb would be to have less than 100 members.

Partially Resolved April 24, 2014.

You can now get to the Add Users screen. The first screen of 25 results will appear, and you can add anyone from that 25 results to your group.

Issue

Daily Notifications: We are aware of the following issues with some individual's email daily digest notifications:

  • Discussion Board: Unread message – shows incorrect count
  • Discussion Board: Unread message – sometimes see two entries

Also can see incorrect counts for Blogs/Wikis even though the tools are not used in the course.
